Slow Network Issues

Slow Network
Possible symptoms are that some programs (e.g. bank rec) freezeĀ on workstation, but work okay on the server.
Possible causes
1. Antivirus software on server or on client
2. Firewall software on server or on client
3. Actual networking hardware issues
4. Sub-optimal Actian/Pervasive database configuration
Things to test
For possible causes 1-3, the thing to try to find out is whether other applications are affected. If installed, try to run MS Excel from the server at a workstation. If it takes more than a second to see the splash screen, or if it takes more than 3 seconds to get a blank worksheet displayed, then the problem definitely lies in causes 1-3.
If that test works OK, then make sure that PSQL is running on the server. If it is running on the workstation instead of the server, then things will be slow (this is for 3-user installations, not 10-user).
Things to try changing
Make sure the PSQL database is configured to only use TCP/IP as the network protocol. Configure your PSQL client to use TCP/IP as the only the communication protocol. Make sure both the Btrieve and PSQL ODBC engine on the server are both configured to use TCP/IP. These can be done by following steps.
Configuring Client
1. Go to the Windows Start/Programs list and look under the Actian/Pervasive group to find the Actian/Pervasive Control Center.
2. Go to Configuration/Client/Communications Protocols.
3. Set Supported Protocols to TCP/IP only.
Configuring Server
1. Go to the Windows Start/Programs list and look under the Actian/Pervasive group to find the Actian/Pervasive Control Center.
2. Register the server going to Configuration/Server/Communications Protocols, and set Supported Protocols to TCP/IP.
3. Restart the client/workstations and the server.
